Analogy/Homology Blog Post

HOMOLOGY
A: The two different animals I picked for this Post are Bears and seals. they both have similar feet structures. Both animals hunt in the water and on land.

B: The Homologous trait between these two animals are their feet/flipper. both have five claws and are no retractable they have very similar bone structure in the flipper and paw and both feet touch heel and toe to the ground.  both feet have webbed toes to make it easier to hunt in the water as well as on land.

C: both animals came from an animal called the puijila

D:

  1. Hi Heather,
I really like the comparison of these two animals. It is interesting these two animals would be related since Polar bears hunt seals. I would like to know a little more about this common ancestor, like what was the link?

Part of the assignment was to include an analogous trait as well.

  2. Hey Heather,

This is a great example! I honestly had no idea that seals had claws. I really see similarities between the two pictures you posted and Alexandra does make a good point about the irony that polar bears eat seals! What is the specific type of seal you are comparing? Are they both specifically arctic animals?

  3. That was a very interesting homologous comparison. You discussed similarities but remember that for homologous traits what we are looking for are the differences based upon functional and environmental differences.

I doubt the polar bear arose from the puijila, but the specific ancestor wasn't as important as understanding that both of these organisms are mammals and inherited their forelimb structure from that common mammalian ancestor. The differences we see are due to environmental and functional differences.

    Missing the analogous trait comparison.

  4. Hello heather!

Very nice conparison! I remember seeing various types of seals and sea lions and never once have I looked at their feet. Its kind of amazing to realize they actually have claws. I think it would have been nice to add a little more detail to the function of their claws. Such as the polars ability to dig for seal pups, and of course the seals claws being used to hide from polar bears. Great post nonetheless and very nice pictures!
